Women's Sports Rights- Title XI

by Chelsea Tjarks

Before the late 20th century women and sports were not thought of together. Physical education instructers worried that competition would make women and girls less femine. Because of the hard work and preservation of some strong willed women including Billie Jean King, Roberta Gibbs, and many others, that statement could not be more different from life today. As a competitive soccer player, track runner, and basketball player, all sports originally considered unfemine, I would not be the person I am today or have the same rights without these athletic and political advancements for women made possible by Title IX. The New Rochelle Loose Cannons, one of the top teams in the Westchester Women's Soccer League, Captain Lucille said, "Without Title IX there would be no league. Without Title IX we wouldn't still be calling ourselves athletes. Without Title IX...life wouldn't be as full."

If you look below, you see that the number of accomplishments for women in sports are much higher around and after Title IX was signed. Title IX has dramatically raised praticipation in sports for women, high school sport praticipation has increased by 904%.
