School Song
EX MONTIBUS ROBUR
UHS : "Her" mountains etc
Shall never tower in vain
Long, long ago they bound us
UHS : Long, long ago "she" bound us
In strong affection's chain
They gave us strength and beauty
UHS : "See now, I give you beauty,
In rock and slender pine
UHS : And strength of oak and pine
With them we share the duty
UHS : Take them and share my duty
To watch the border line
UHS : Watch ye the Border Line
UHS Boys : Shout it out, lift the skies,
Stamp your feet my boys.
Girls: Sweetly let your voices rise
Song means more than noise
All : Up to Heaven "Umtali" fling
"Umtali" "Umtali" sing. all
Lift the skies
That every heart shall stir
As we hear our anthem rise
Ex Montibus Robur
To join the stream of time
UHS : On the hurrying streams of time,
True be our love, no matter
What other hills we climb.
Though outward bravely turning
New roads to pioneer,
Our hearts shall ne'er cease burning
When this refrain we hear.
UHS : Chorus as above
Boys:
Girls:
All:
Shout it out
Lift the skies
Every heart shall stir
As we hear our anthem rise
Ex Montibus Robur
Umtali all, Umtali sing
May They All Rest in Peace

Ramsay Powell writes:-
I was looking at Eddy Norris's "Umtali Story" site, and noticed he had the War cry wrong.
It began with one chap, usually Rory Von Lillianfield
It was:
" Shumba Um, Shumba Ta, Shumba Li, Shumba Shumba, Umtali !!!"

COMMENT BY EDDY NORRIS
Whilst compiling the Umtali Roll of Honour I was advised that this memorial had been demolished and the cast iron names plates that carried the names of those lost in World War 1 and 2 was lying on the scrap metal heap at the Municipal Site.
Can anyone else make coke comment or clarify this point?

Don Munroe Writes:-
Been corresponding with a woman in Umtali, she says the Cenotaph is still there but there are hoet posters all over it, so a bloke is going to take a stroll and have a look to see if the cast iron plates are still there.

Alan Harris Writes:-
The Cenotaph was intact when I last saw it in 2000, however the bronze/cast iron plaques were missing.

Ian Dickie-Clark Writes:-
I did see the brass plaques on the floor behind the counter of the Charge Office at Mutare Central, but this was about 10 years ago.

I was In 2RAR as a platoon commander in june 1976, and was talking with Marianne Habing the night before she and her Mum were killed by the landmine, just so that people can put a face and a person to a name she was 15-16 (guess) and definatly one of the prettiest girls that I have ever seen, long blond wavey hair, beautiful face and the most incredible smile, that was thirty four years ago, and she is still in my mind, I went to the scene of the landmine on the 6th june 1976, what a sad loss, but not forgotten-Brian Lennon-Smith
